PERSEUS : Projet Etudiant de Recherche Spatiale Européen Universitaire et Scientifique

Our association started the year 2021 by joining a project named PERSEUS by the CNES. 11 students are currently working on this project of space research, contributing towards three main themes:

  • Ground control: A part of the group works on a robot meant to secure the environment around a rocket after a vertical landing. More concretely, the robot must be able to analyze its environment and detect potential fuel leaks near the rocket, be able to connect to the fuel reserves in order to empty them as well as be able to connect to the onboard control system in the rocket in order to deactivate it and ensure the stability of the rocket once on the ground.
  • Avionics: This activity consists of the implementation of an already existing protocol: openPOWERLINK (OPLK) inside the rocket, named ASTREOS. This allows for communication between the different onboard modules with the help of ethernet connections. In its actual state, OPLK software is too heavy for implementation in ASTREOS, and as such, for on-board implementation, the objective is to implement it as a kernel and to reduce its impact as much as possible.
  • Propulsion: This part of the project consists of diaphasic LOx (liquid oxygen) and ethanol flow simulation, with the help of Fluent software, at the exit points of the pintle injectors inside the motor of the rocket named Minerva. This is meant in relation to the development of reusable propulsion engines within ArianeGroup. The liquid sheet dynamics as well as their interactions are analyzed, and a simulation of the fuel combustion upon exiting the chamber is conducted.

In January 2022, our three teams presented their work at the annual PERSEUS seminar, and our ground control team was presented with a prize for its innovation.
